G.I.Dave’s Cartoon Realism: Silly or Gritty?

“Cobra Stops the World”By @G_I_DAVE

Hello fellow fans and friends! G.I. DAVE here again, and we’re back diving into another G.I. Joe Sunbow episode to see if it leans more silly or realistic.
After the aviation-heavy survival THRILLER (I was even surprised rewatching it again) of “In the Presence of Mine Enemies,” I wanted to hit one that plays with real-world geopolitics and Terror— the kind of episode that could “show off” a real world Terrorism plan against all nations, something we see often in Sunbow, but never really “Realistic threats” per say.

Cobra Stops the World” (S1E9).
I vaguely remembered this one, and In my head before I rewatched it, I simply remembered it as a terror plot against oil tankers. it’s not about some goofy super-laser or mutant monster. It’s about OIL. Straight-up economic warfare. Energy as a weapon. THAT IS REAL.
The lasers are still there (can’t escape the ‘toon completely, and I’m a full 1-155 comic guy), but the core of this episode is based as hell, but then gets “Scooby doo silly” at points.
The episode opens with Cobra Commander announceing to the world that Cobra has spent the last 12 hours hitting global energy targets — oil tankers, rigs, the whole supply chain. We see Rattlers smashing Tankers, HISS’s Skrakking oil fields.. The Commander wants the countries of the world to submit to Cobra, or face a “new dark age.”

The threat lands because oil really is that important. This same story has been played since before anyone of us were born. One could also argue most of the major conflicts in history are “resource based”, going as far to say Japan attacked Pearl Harbor largely because of oil, but oil was part of a much broader conflict involving Japan’s imperial expansion, U.S. sanctions, and strategic calculations, but yeah, OIL.
Duke and Scarlett are already on it from HQ, Talk about QRF?..more like WTF. Duke’s airborne in a Skystriker with Ace doing recon. Scarlett’s on the ground driving an Armed R.A.M.

We see a “sunbow exclusive Joe” Sparks!, and I like this guy. This figure would have been way cooler than shipwreck with a head bandage, but that’s just me. Sparks is trying to trace the broadcast, Cobra’s bouncing it off satellites — smart I like that. The “signal” he is trying to capture is from a hidden base and they have no clue where it is, THE BASE Cobra Commander and Destro are controlling the signal from.

Meanwhile, Cobra has a “cloaked” water base base that’s more like an “Atlantean Death star”, and they’re systematically taking tankers off the map.
This is where the episode gets silly. This “base” is firing SO MUCH AA fire at a single SHARC, with Deep-six, and Torpedo as the passenger, it’s kinda silly they didn’t get hit. Torpedo is complaining he’d rather be in the water, and the boys are just casually chatting it up while Cobra AA misses with every shot, from a trillion AA pieces.
SHARCAA.jpgSHARCAA.jpg (366.41 KiB) Viewed 9 times

Deep-six dives down, and the SHARC “Shits out” Torpedo from some hidden rear ramp. I’m just shaking my head. It gets worse. When Torpedo approaches the base, they literally fire torpedos at a single diver through doors similar to a submarine. In true sunbow “realism” Torpedo fires a single harpoon into the porthole (Exhaust port..Death star..yeah) And hits the ammunition magazines, and just like that, the entire multi billion dollar, “base thing” starts cooking off. Deep-Six joins torpedo underwater, and finds 3 Eels approaching with a “sonic weapon”.
Here is where I’d peel it back a bit, because an underwater sonic weapon is absolutely LEGIT.
Did you know that the high powered active Sonar systems on our submarines are SO powerful, they can KILL or severely injure divers and water life, especially if they have “air filled organs”?
Here’s is a good example:
https://youtu.be/AaO6jQEmfoY?is=Jjv6Xhn0EWQ3qOxK
In this video around :48 in, you see the divers clearly react from an active sonar ping, which was probably MILES away. I’ve read that if submarines suspect enemy divers, they can even use it as a weapon or deterrent.
In 17′ I had a project to mount 2 LRADs to the top of two Humvees. I, and my electronics lead (silver star winner from the assault of Baghdad, BRILLIANT guy) knew exactly what these were, and we took them in the parking lot, ran the leads, and wanted to play with them. The controls were STR8 “Caveman” with on/off, INTENSITY, and some P/A stuff. At around 100 meters we only got to about 1/4 intensity, before I felt like I was going to piss myself. GOOD TIMES.
Sonic weapon.jpgSonic weapon.jpg (592.62 KiB) Viewed 9 times

So an underwater sonic device would be even MORE effective because sound transmits even better through water. But good ol’ Deep-six shrugs it off (I’m not kidding, I almost lost my bladder and bowel contents) and just swims up, takes the weapon, breaks it, and bashes the faceplates of the 3 Eels…Nevermind they don’t attack him, it’s not like they are ELITE troops.. ammirite? Whatever…lol, the base goes down and you see hundreds of Cobra personnel have to Evac. ONE…SPEAR. and ZERO results for location of the “hidden base”, Joes FAIL.

Duke and Ace, on the search in a Skystriker get jumped in a dogfight with Rattlers. They get shot down, eject, and end up in the jungle where Major Bludd and some local forces are waiting.
Eject!.jpgEject!.jpg (440.76 KiB) Viewed 9 times

This is NOT “my” major Bludd. He finds the Joes, with the help of local “Tucaro” types that Cobra traded weapons for their loyalty.
Bludd.jpgBludd.jpg (642.59 KiB) Viewed 9 times

Major Bludd should have executed them on the spot, but NOOOoooo..he has to lead them to a pit of snakes to throw them in, of course they get out of that, find a secret Cobra airfield, and run through an open tarmac with a multi platoon sized mixed force of Blueshirts, CGs, And Tucaros, and as always never get hit. In my world, these 2 dudes would be hamburger.

Duke gets in a unique jet, possibly a Drakken or Viggen type swedish looking fighter, and “GHOST RIDE’S” his jet like I did my bike when I was 10, into the entrance of the base, Ace picks him up in the Rattler, and they fly off without a cut. Once again ZERO results for location of the “hidden base”, Joes FAIL.

Best part of this scene? Hearing “Sunbow Bludd” scream like a complete BIOTCH as he falls in the snake pit. Seriously, that scream should be on podcasters soundboards. That ain’t MY Bludd…

Meanwhile Scarlett pulls a classic disguise infiltration on a Cobra safehouse. This just gets silly with the “Scooby doo trap door” stuff, but Scarlett kicks ass with no effort.
BUT! Hands down the best part of this entire animation (besides the main oil plot) is seeing a cobra trooper with his mask PULLED UP, TO EAT A SANDWICH. I literally chuckled out loud. Sandwich Viper gets beat down by Scarlett, but I will attribute that to “Bad subway tuna”, because 5 Blueshirts in a room should have shwacked one operative in seconds…Scarlett interrogates an officer and he’s got NUTHIN. AAaannd again ZERO results for location of the “hidden base”, Joes FAIL.
Sammichviper.jpgSammichviper.jpg (433.91 KiB) Viewed 9 times

FINALLY someone (a no-name at that) Sparks figures out how to locate the base through signal patterns. Cobra commander upped the ante by telling the world “if you don’t submit, I’ll destroy one tanker an hour”, and figures out where the base is, off of Patagonia East if the Falklands.

And here is the HUGE Blueballs moment, you see a FULL roster of Joes scramble, naval and air assets launched in a MASSIVE coordinated assault, even seeing the W.H.A.L.E. deploy troops like an LCVP. You really get the feeling this is gunna be a HUGE battle….

but Duke and Ace show up in the captured Rattler and waste everything in a single strike. Why don’t Rattlers do that to Joes? Yeaaahhh…

The Joe team makes it inside to the Commander and Destro, and Duke grabs the transmitter from CC like a toddler with a lighter, before he can destroy ALL the tankers in the world with one push of a button… and when it’s time to Cuff the commander, he deploys some “Gas” from his helmet and he and Destro Escapes.
Gotcha.jpgGotcha.jpg (372.37 KiB) Viewed 9 timesGasface.jpgGasface.jpg (368.58 KiB) Viewed 9 times

The episode ends with that “Bro-F$&#er” Duke cruising in a Skystriker trying to get in Snake eye’s girl’s pants, but that woman says “well..Snake eyes ain’t around” and Scarlett asks Duke out for dinner while he jokes about parking the Skystriker. I know in sunbow Duke and Scarlett are a thing, but since I was a kid, and even now, Sunbow Duke is “That dude” that is trying to screw his best buddies girl behind his back. Go on..hate me..I just can’t stand Sunbow Duke.

The Realistic Core: Geopolitical Warfare & Energy as a Weapon.
This is where the episode shines for me. Cobra isn’t chasing world domination with some cartoon doomsday device. They’re going after oil infrastructure — tankers at sea, rigs, supply lines. The goal is to create a global energy crisis, spike prices, cause panic, and force governments to kneel.Sound familiar? This mirrors real 1970s oil crises (1973 OPEC embargo and 1979 Iranian Revolution shock) that caused fuel shortages, rationing, economic chaos, and huge shifts in global power. Modern examples hit even harder: attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities (Abqaiq–Khurais 2019), pipeline sabotage, threats to the Strait of Hormuz, or any conflict that disrupts energy exports. Energy security is national security. Cobra weaponizing it is straight-up asymmetric warfare — the kind of thing actual terrorist groups or state actors have tried or threatened. The “new dark age” line isn’t just cartoon villainy. It’s exactly the kind of language used in real strategic assessments about what happens when oil supply collapses: blackouts, transport failure, food shortages, civil unrest. The episode gets that right without over-explaining it.
THIS is the kind of real world type “Terror plots” that factions around the world, and Cobra dream about.
I’m in Michigan, and was there during the blackout of ’03, and we didn’t have power for 4-5 days. I watched as each day crept closer to civil unrest (I HAVE STORIES), and I quickly realized how our society is literally days away from complete anarchy if our nation lost all power. That was one of the driving forces in the back of my mind when I designed the MCV’s EMP/EMI defense system. Know this, any U.S. equipment utilizing my design, WILL survive a “high altitude” airborne EMP, and presidential communications will continue.

So what do you guys think? Does this one hold up for you as a “serious” episode? Any other Season 1 standalones you think nail the realism better? Drop your thoughts below, and help me remember the sunbow episodes to break down that may be on the more “realistic side”— and don’t forget to tell me your favorite MRE!

Yo Joe!

  1. That’s a really interesting point about comparing it to real-world terrorism plots. It’s wild to think about how those ideas were being explored in cartoons at the time.
